Parnell Prairie Preserve Hike

June 8th 6:30pm - 8pm

180th Ave. and 45th. St. Somerest WI, just north of the railroad tracks.

Join The Prairie Enthusiasts (TPE) and Somerset Park committee for a leisurely hike at this dry mesic prairie.  This is the site of the former Somerset dump, on land is owned jointly by the Town and Village of Somerset.  The site has some areas of remnant prairie and the town and village are restoring the prairie and using the site as a nature park.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) provided grant ,money and technical expertise to begin the restoration.  In winter 2010 brush and some trees were removed and in April the USFWS and Somerset Fire Department did a prescribed burn at the site.  The prairie is responding nicely to this initial work.

On the hike we'll talk about the restoration process and learn to identify some common prairie grasses and flowers.  The rustic trails are over rolling hills so wear sturdy shoes.

Parnell Prairie Preserve is located at 180th Ave. and 45th. St., just north of the railroad tracks.
