Town of Somerset Mailbox Policy 1. Mailboxes in Town right-of-way shall be installed with their posts or bases a minimum of two feet back from the edge of the existing shoulder of the road. The mailbox should be located 41” – 45” above the grade of the shoulder, with the front of the box, when open, not extending onto the shoulder of the road. 2. The mailbox and post should be able to withstand the force of flying snow and slush from traffic and snow removal operations. Posts should be 4 X 4 wooden or a maximum 2” steel pipe. The post should be buried at least 12” and not more than 24” below ground surface and may not be set in concrete or on a base plate. This includes flower boxes, planters and brick or wood enclosures of any kind. The post shall not exceed 24” above the top of the mailbox. 3. Any claim of damage from Town road operations will be investigated by Town maintenance staff. If a mailbox or base is damaged by flying snow and/or is not placed at the proper distance and height from the roadway, it will not be replaced by the Town. If a mailbox is hit and damaged by the Town maintenance equipment and cannot be fixed, it will be replaced with a metal or plastic box acceptable to the U.S. Postal Service not to exceed $25.00. Decorative or other types of ornamental mailboxes will not be replaced in kind. This policy was adopted by the Town Board on December 2, 2009. ________________________________________, Ed Schachtner, Chairman ________________________________________, Jeri Koester, Clerk/Treas.
